Thal Welfare Organization

Thal Welfare Organization (TWO) is a Dehi Taraqyati Tanzeem (rural development organization) working in the backward area of district Layyah. This is the most backward and disadvantaged area of the southern Punjab. Most of the population is dependent upon Agriculture, which include poor small farmers whose land holding is two to three acres each and tenant farmers/ Agriculture labourers. The children of these tenant farmers are forced to work on Landlord’s fields. Health facilities in these communities are non-existent. Literacy rate is below the nations own appalling thirty-three percent figures. Female Literacy rate is very low which is touching dangerous figures. There are no proper female educational facilities operating in this area. Government has built a few Girl Primary schools in this area, the schools are not properly working due to lack of teaching staff. Quality of education is very poor as teachers are not well educated and trained.

TWO took first step by starting its Dehi Taraquiati Program (rural development) by starting Female education Program by establishing community schools in this area. In the history of Layyah for the first time some non-governmental organization has started a female education Program. There was a cultural norm that people were reluctant to send their girls to schools but it was is only possible due the Thal Welfare Organization’s awareness program, which was so fruit full in motivating village people to send their females to these community schools. Later on community them selves involved in this program by organizing Village School Committee. This committee is comprised of parents in each village.

At this time Thal Welfare Organization is successfully running 43-Non Formal Basic Education community Schools. Total 1291 students were enrolled in these schools out of them 62%(811) are female students and 38%(480) are male students under 14 years old. Under age group of 5-9 Years girl students are 449 and boy students are 331.Under age group 10-14 years old girl students are 362 and boy students are 149.Most of these children were working before coming to these schools.

600 students have passed primary school in the non-formal schools working under Thal Organization.

Thal Welfare Organization

Thal Welfare Organization comprises of dedicated team members whose continues struggle and commitment has enabled to achieve some of objectives in a very short time. Here is a brief overview of its activities.

¨       Non Formal Education Program for promoting Village

Thal Welfare Organization has started education program under Education Project under Prime Minister’s Literacy Commission, Islamabad in the remote villages where already no schooling facilities for the women exist. These schools are community based and are run in the boundary of a house. Community has contributed in this project by giving building for these schools. Thal Welfare Organization has trained these teachers with the coordination of Bunyiad Literacy program. The idea behind these schools is to assure attendance of female teacher as in these schools, female teacher is mostly from that community. This shows not only punctuality but also due to relations with the community, children feel more confidence to study from this teacher. Presently Thal Welfare Organization is successfully running 43-non Formal schools in 43 different distant villages inn Tehsil Karor.

Passed out students (Primary class)

¨      Male Student          250

¨      Female Students Enrolled: 350

Total Male –Female Children: 600

¨     Health Activities

Thal Welfare Organization is only organization that has started health awareness among the rural community. Keeping in view the needs and wants of the rural community, Thal Welfare Organization has arranged free eye camps in rural and backward villages of Tehsil Karor. One at Sarghani, Katcha(Riverian Area) and other in Chak 94,99/TDA in Tehsil Karor. About 1000 men, women and children get benefit of free medication.

Community is mobilized to understand the importance of health by inviting them in village meetings with the doctor. In near future Thal Welfare Organization is going to establish Mother and childcare Centers in remote areas in collaboration with some other organization.

¨      Women Development

Established a women skill enhancement center  in village where cluster of villages are getting benefit  to train their women  in income generating skills.

Until now about 200 women were trained .

The standard of living of this area is very backward as compared to other areas of Pakistan. The women of this area are being deprived of their fundamental rights. Financial statuses of the women are very poor, as they are dependent to males. As it is a male dominating society and its worse example is Divorce system. If a woman is divorced, she has to face moral and financial crisis. There is no one to help her at this critical event of her life. People hate to establish relation with her. With in house and out side in the society, she would lose reputation.

There is no adequate facilities offered by the government where she could work smoothly according to her best potential.

Thal Welfare Organization has started women development program for the welfare of these village women by establishing a skill center, where village girls are trained in local skills i.e. Embroidery, Tailoring and Handicraft making. Under this program village women are trained in income generating schemes so that they can earn sufficient income to stand on their own feet. This scheme has not only improved the financial status of village women but also raised their social status.

TWO established this center in year 2000 in collaboration with TVO and now running this center in collaboration with Punjab Vocational Training Council. Women are supplied with raw material for producing households like embroidered clothes, school uniforms, school bags, children clothes, toys, etc. For marketing of these products in local and major cities a marketing department will be established. The revenue generated from all this will be distributed among the women of the center.

¨      Agriculture Extension Services

Most of the population is dependent upon Agriculture, which include poor small farmers whose land holding is two to three acres each and tenant farmers. Production capacity of these farmers is very low. They are following traditional farming and don’t know modern techniques of farming.

Thal Welfare Organization has started farmer advisory service in 1997. This advisory team consists of Professional Agriculture Graduates and experts from Agriculture Department who give advice free of cost before growing each major crop. About five villages have got benefit of this advisory service. This service has improved the socio-economic status of majority of farmers in this area.

¨       Resource center

Thal Welfare Organization has established one resource center facilitated with various informative magazines, development journals and newsletters.
